Box Office: Star Wars, Justice League and It can save 2017 after a poor summer
Thanks to the blow-out success of It and the likely solid figures posted by the likes of Kingsman: The Golden Circle, The LEGO Ninjago Movie and American Made, 2017 is probably going to post a record September season in terms of unadjusted domestic grosses. And if that happens, it will be the third month this year, out of nine thus far, where said overall domestic grosses set a record in 2017.
With all the talk about the declining domestic box office and especially the summer downturn, it's worth noting that the summer season (May through August) were the only months thus far that suffered.
For the record, since Hollywood essentially gave up between Fate of the Furious and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (sorry, Smurfs: The Lost Village, Gifted and Going in Style), it shouldn't be a surprise that April barely made over $500m, with 44% coming from Fate of the Furious alone. But Beauty and the Beast, along with a deluge of biggies like Logan and Skull Island helped set a record in March. And then Wonder Woman helped power what turned out to be a record June at the North American box office. And, for the rest of the year, 2017 has had the fourth-biggest January and the third-biggest February on record
